When submitting an assignment for a Canvas course remember different types of assignments may require different submission methods.
- Assignments may require a text entry submission, file upload, or possibly editing of an embedded google file.
- Discussions will likely require a text entry submission using the rich content editor capable of adding images, videos, or links when needed.
- Quizzes may be multiple choice and/or require text entry submissions for multiple questions. When you have completed your quiz, click the blue ‘Submit’ button at the bottom of the quiz.
To submit an assignment in Canvas, first navigate to the course you are turning an assignment in for by clicking ‘Courses’ in the sidebar on the left side of your Canvas window and then selecting the proper course from the list displayed. Then click ‘Assignments’ in the navigation sidebar. Next, click the assignment you are turning in from the list of assignments in the Assignments Navigator. For assignments using the text submission, or upload submission options, click the blue ‘Submit’ button to view the submission tools provided for the assignment.
Text Entry Submission
You can write out your answers or copy and paste them into this text entry box. When you have finished your assignment and are ready to turn it in, click the blue ‘Submit Assignment’ button.
Another nifty feature of the Text Entry box is the ability to embed Google Files. To embed a Google File, select the Google Drive icon, and then your file.
If you do not see this icon, you may need to use the external tools dropdown menu. It's the little plug just to the right of the Google Drive Icon shown above!
When using the dropdown, be sure to select FCA Google Apps. The Google Drive (LTI 1.3) button looks similar, but will not work!
Keep in mind there is a difference between embedding a Google File into the text entry box, Uploading a Google File, and submitting a Google assignment (the later two shown below).
File Upload Submission
If your assignment requires a file upload you will be expected to upload a file from your Chromebook or Google Drive Account. To do this use the File Upload tool that is on the assignment page. An example is shown below. Notice you can submit multiple files by pressing the button.
Keep in mind you if you want to submit a file from your Google Drive account, such as a photo, video, Doc, or Slide already in your Drive, you will need to click the Google Drive tab and then select the file you want to submit from the file explorer provided.
Discussion Reply
If the assignment is a discussion, you will need to click ‘Reply’ to either the discussion topic or a classmate if the discussion assignment requires peer review. The rich content editor will open. You can write out your answers in this text entry box. When you have finished writing your response, click the blue ‘Post Reply’ button.
Google Assignment
Google Assignments are usually a Doc, Sheet, or Slide that have been pre-prepared by your teacher. Often these assignments will have some type of prompt built into the Google File. To submit a Google Assignment, first make sure you have completed all the steps instructed by your teacher!
To open your Google Assignment, first navigate to that assignment in Canvas, and select the file that is attached to the assignment (outlined below in red). This will make a copy of the assignment, and place it in your Google Drive, allowing you to make edits/answer prompts. This will also open that file from your Google Drive in another Tab.
You can always close this Google File and come back later to resume the assignment. It can be found again through Google Drive, or following the same steps above to open the file again through Canvas.
Once finished with the assignment, all that is left to do is Submit!
Google will ask for confirmation that the assignment is ready to be submitted. Select Submit one more time!
That's it! Your Google Assignment has been submitted.
